Cruise Description

13 Night Cruise sailing from Southampton roundtrip aboard Braemar.

A seemingly endless collection of stunning natural wonders and an abundance of fascinating wildlife are yours to discover on this incredible exploration of Iceland aboard Braemar. Each port of call will be as breathtaking as the last; and the awe-inspiring sights and experiences will create memories which will last a lifetime.

Stopping overnight in Reykjavik is the perfect start to your Icelandic adventure. The stunning capital is your gateway to the wonders of the Golden Circle, and you’ll have plenty of time to take in the ‘Big Three’: The Gullfoss ‘Golden' Waterfall, the Geysir Hot Springs and Thingvellir National Park. Or perhaps you would prefer to visit the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa and bathe in the warm, mineral-rich waters; or take a boat tour along the coast on the lookout for Atlantic Puffins. The choice is yours before cruising on to Ísafjörður. Vigur Island is just a short boat ride away from Ísafjörður – the Westfjords largest town – and well worth a visit to encounter thousands of sea birds. Also close by is the unspoilt Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, where magnificent mountains and craggy cliffs are home to hundreds of birds of various species.

The following day will begin in Akureyri, ideally situated for discovering the awe-inspiring Godafoss ‘Waterfall of the Gods’ and Lake Mývatn. The beauty of these natural wonders has to be seen to be believed. Alternatively you’ll have the chance join once-in-a-lifetime whale watching excursions, going in search of Minke and Humpback Whales, as well as dolphins and porpoises. Once back on board Braemar you will enjoy an evening of memorable scenic cruising, with the outstanding beauty of Eyjafjörður, Hrisey Island and Skjálfandi Bay to take in from the ship’s decks. The final stop of your epic Icelandic exploration is the town of Seyðisfjörður, stopping here after immersing yourself in the mysteries of the Borgarfjörður Eystri and cruising the twisting Seyðisfjörður. You could savour the magnificent scenery and admire the colourful houses here; though a tour to the enchanting Skálanes Nature and Heritage Centre, home to Eider Ducks and much more, is highly recommended. Before returning to the UK, Braemar will also divert to the Faroe Islands and call into the charming capital, Tórshavn.

Highlights of this cruise:

Reykjavik, Iceland
Overlooked by the impressive Hallgrímskirkja bell tower, Reykjavik is a stunning city with a number of interesting museums and some of the country’s most beautiful natural wonders within easy reach. Highlights include the Blue Lagoon Spa, Thingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls and the Geysir hot spring area.

Ísafjörður (Isafjordur), Iceland
Perched on a sand-spit jutting out into an inlet on one of northwest Iceland's deepest fjords, Ísafjörður has a fine natural harbour which has made this one of the country's main fishing and trading centres for over 250 years.

Akureyri, Iceland
On your journey to Akureyri you’ll sail through the longest fjord in Iceland, Eyjafjordur, a wonderful prelude to your time on shore. If you’re looking for culture then head to Listagil, the centre of arts, crafts and design in Akureyri. To discover the surrounding natural wonders, take a sightseeing tour to Godafoss, ‘Waterfall of the Gods’ and Lake Myvatn. A visit here also offers the rare chance to go whale watching and see these splendid creatures in their natural environment: look out for Blue, Fin, Humpback, Minke and Sei whales.

Seyðisfjörður (Seydisfjordur), Iceland
Seyðisfjörður is regarded as one of Iceland’s most picturesque towns. Its remoteness and hard-to-reach location makes a visit here even more special: one of the advantages of cruising the Icelandic coast. The valley above the town echoes to the sound of the 25 thundering waterfalls formed by the river Fjaroara as it cascades down to a lagoon at the head of the fjord.

Tórshavn (Torshavn), Faroe Islands
The Vikings discovered these islands over a thousand years ago, and established their main harbour at Tórshavn. With forts in place to protect from pirates, it became a major trading centre. Today it is a picturesque town of flagstone streets, elegant buildings, informative museums, theatres and parks.
