Cruise Description

17 Night Cruise sailing from Southampton roundtrip aboard Balmoral.

Sail to the Mediterranean in the spring and let Balmoral be your guide to discovering sun-kissed Spanish, French and Italian islands where charming towns and cities, stunning beaches and some of the region’s most spectacular unspoilt scenery awaits your discovery.

After a short stop in the pretty port city of El Ferrol, Ibiza – one of Spain’s most popular destinations – is the first of a string of Mediterranean islands on your itinerary. Take time to discover Ibiza’s UNESCO-listed Dalt Vila Old Town, or the famous salt flats of Las Salinas and you’ll find there’s much more to this ‘party island’ than the renowned nightlife. From Ibiza it’s on to Barcelona, a cosmopolitan Catalan city boasting an abundance of world-class attractions. Be sure to take in Las Ramblas and the architectural wonders of Gaudi, including the iconic Sagrada Familia, before your Mediterranean island hopping adventure continues on the French island of Corsica. Breathtaking coastline and countryside smothered with forests, mountains and rivers is yours to explore, with Balmoral calling into Ajaccio. Take a tour to marvel at the spectacular gorges of Prunelli, where huge granite cliffs plunge into the Prunelli River; or alternatively stay in the city to explore the life of Napoléon Bonaparte – an Ajaccio native – at several superb museums.

Your ship will then sail to two sophisticated Italian islands, calling first into the Sardinian city of Olbia. You’ll find inviting stretches of smooth, soft white sands as well as a few historic highlights such as the beautiful 11th century Basilica of San Simplicio. Opt to head out of Olbia and you could marvel at the Dantesque granite landscapes of the unusual Moon Valley; or even sample the glitz and glamour of the Costa Smeralda resort. In Palermo – the capital of Sicily – you’ll encounter a picture book of attractions, including the Royal Palace, the Cathedral and Teatro Massimo. Further along the coast you’ll find the charming fishing village of Cefalù. Returning to Spanish shores, the delights of Mallorca will await you. Palma’s labyrinth of pretty streets is joy to explore; although you might prefer to take a memorable scenic journey aboard a vintage train to Soller instead. After rounding off your island adventure in style, the historic city of Cádiz and Lisbon – the attraction packed Portuguese capital – beckon before you sail back to Southampton.

Highlights of this cruise:

El Ferrol
El Ferrol is a city in La Coruña provincia, in the comunidad autónoma (“autonomous community”) of Galicia, in extreme northwestern Spain on the Ferrol Inlet of the Atlantic Ocean.

Barcelona - Spain's cosmopolitan second city - overflows with interest and its mood is infused with a vibrant Catalan spirit and heritage.

Olbia, Italy
Situated on the beautiful North East coast of Sardinia, Olbia is often used as a gateway to the island’s fashionable Costa Smeralda holiday resort. A fascinating ancient city, Olbia is also well worth exploring to discover a number of historic structures and archaeological sites.

Palma, Mallorca
Palma is the cosmopolitan capital of Mallorca, the most popular of the Balearic Islands (if not the entire Mediterranean)

Cadiz, Spain
Cadiz - one of Western Europe's most ancient cities - hugs Andalusia’s sunlit Atlantic coast and is characterised by palm trees, lookout towers and weathered old buildings. Historic and pretty, the city centre is a joy to explore with a fascinating Old Town district containing huge stone walls from the 1500s and a beautifully carved cathedral.

Lisbon, Portugal
Spread out over seven hills on the north of the River Tagus, Lisbon is a delightful mix of palaces, art-nouveau cafés, museums, gardens, ancient castles and splendid bridges. Don’t miss a visit to the Centro Commercial Colombo – the biggest shopping mall on the Iberian Peninsula!
