The highlights are seemingly endless on this simply unforgettable festive sailing aboard Balmoral. While those back home will be enduring the typically cold, wet weather of December, you’ll be in for a magical Christmas and New Year celebration from start to finish, visiting fine European cities and a string of stunning sun-kissed islands at the most magical time of the year.

The festivities on board your ship will be in full swing from the moment you set sail from Southampton however, after calling into Lisbon – the attraction-packed Portuguese capital – on Christmas Eve, the celebrations will really kick into gear during a memorable Christmas Day at sea. As you sail towards the Canaries you can forget about the usual stress and strain of the big day and let Fred. Olsen’s attentive staff take of everything as you enjoy festive food, fun and excitement with your friends, loved ones and fellow guests. Boxing Day will also be spent relaxing on board before Balmoral takes in four gorgeous Canary Islands on consecutive days as the year draws to a close. You’ll have the chance to sample a taste of the authentic Canarian lifestyle in pretty Gran Tarajal on the island of Fuerteventura, where you could also uncover the beautiful golden sands of Jandia Beach. Some of the Canaries’ very best beaches will also await your discovery in Gran Canaria, with Las Palmas serving as your gateway to the oasis-like dunes of Maspalomas. Picturesque Puerto de Mogán and the charming towns of Teror and Arucas are well worth a visit too.

Your island-hopping adventures continue in Tenerife, the largest island in the archipelago. Santa Cruz has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and an array of tapas bars and enlightening museums; but if venture further you won’t be disappointed by the breathtaking sight of mighty Mount Teide – the world’s third highest volcano. A short stay in San Sebastian will also allow time to discover several monuments and buildings harbouring La Gomera’s historic links to Christopher Columbus. Madeira is where you’ll say goodbye to 2018 and welcome the arrival of the New Year in style. After arriving in Funchal early on New Year’s Eve, you can take the day to discover an abundance of highlights such as the floral levada walking trails and the Cabo Girão sea cliff; then board step back on board Balmoral for a fantastic night of celebration, culminating with the chance to watch one of the world’s largest New Year’s firework displays from the decks of your ship. Before sailing home you’ll also head to Spain to begin 2019 with a rewarding exploration of pretty La Coruña.

Spread out over seven hills on the north of the River Tagus, Lisbon is a delightful mix of palaces, art-nouveau cafés, museums, gardens, ancient castles and splendid bridges. Don’t miss a visit to the Centro Commercial Colombo – the biggest shopping mall on the Iberian Peninsula!

Gran Tarajal, Fuerteventura
Gran Tarajal is one of the largest towns on the island of Fuerteventura. Once renowned as a busy shipping town where the island’s tomato export was shipped, Gran Tarajal now offers an authentic taste of Canaries culture with a relaxed feel and a constant air of tranquillity.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Tenerife’s wonderful climate and resorts have been attracting tourism for decades and rightly so. Santa Cruz is built around boulevards and wide avenues that link elegant squares and parks. A tour to the exotic Botanical Gardens or the mystical and intriguing Pyramids of Guimar is a must.

San Sebastian, La Gomera
San Sebastian is the little capital of one of the lesser-known, yet beautiful Canary Islands - La Gomera.
